With an ink jet or contact coder the panel can be marked successfully on the surface or on the edge. The ink jet allows quick message changes and the use of variable information such as batch and shift codes.

Furniture manufacturers can benefit from improved tracking of panels through automated processes, by printing a bar code onto the surface of a chipboard or MDF panel. The success of a bar code applied by ink jet depends on the quality of the substrate, but even on chipboard high-magnification bar codes can provide sufficient contrast to be readable.
